“God is the only reasonable explanation for the existence of pleasure in the world. Moments of pleasure are remnants, like goods washed ashore from a shipwreck, like bits of Paradise extended through time.”

Crazy in Walakitang

<< || >>

Last month I was lucky enough to travel to the Central American country of Nicaragua. Our destination was Walakitang, an extremely remote village on the border between Honduras and Nicaragua. It is an 8 hour drive from the capital city Managua, and a 2 day boat trip through the jungle on the "Rio Coco." The main purpose of our journey was to hand out a thousand pairs of Croc shoes to the children who live there with no shoes.

One of the things that we encountered on the trip was Crazy Sickness.  People with this problem run around with their eyes closed attacking anything in their path. It appears that Crazy Sickness results when the local witch doctor or "Sukia," casts a curse upon a person causing them to be possessed by a demon. However the powers of darkness cannot stand against the power of Jesus Christ. When our team would pray for a person with Crazy Sickness the dark spirit would break and you could see a transformation.

There is another way to be rid of the Sickness: The witch doctor offers a plastic charm necklace for 1000 Cordobas (roughly $50US) which is thought to prevent Crazy Sickness.  Another option is to have the witch doctor slaughter a black pig and bathe in its blood.

I believe that part of God’s plan for our trip was for the people in the village to witness the Power of God in healing the ones we prayed for. They were left with a decision to make. They could give glory to God and seek healing and salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ.  Or they could seek the “Sukia” and her offer of healing and salvation through the blood of a pig.

Antonio, a Misquito Indian pastor from Walakitang, is launching a church in the village.  His 40 church members have taken a revolutionary approach to confronting Crazy Sickness: they pray!  As Pastor Antonio's church continues to grow we expect to see an awakening in Walakitang and the total defeat of Crazy Sickness.  Please pray for Walakitang to become a beacon of hope in the Rio Coco area.
